Character Snippet

She wanders through the supermarket, fondling cans of beans and bags of chips, the jars of relish and weighing plump tomatoes in her weathered hands, the things people like her can’t have anymore. The security guards watch her carefully, making sure she doesn’t slip anything into her voluminous patched skirt. One of them makes a disparaging remark about her breasts, braless under her thin shirt, “ugly old sacks”, one of them says, laughing. Her lips harden, she ignores them but her shoulders are stiff.
As she turns to leave, she stands in front of the guards, and she meets the eyes of the tallest boy with grim assurance. “You will understand boy. One day, you will understand why we gave these things up.”
